Stump Grinding in Titusville

We grind leftover stumps and their surface roots below grade, then clear or backfill the hole so the ground is usable again. Tell us what you want there next, such as sod, a bed or a patio, and we set the grinding depth to match.

Why grind a stump instead of leaving it

A cut stump is not finished business. Many species keep feeding the roots and push up new shoots around the cut. Camphor and Brazilian pepper are notorious for it. Stumps that do die start to rot, and soft, damp wood draws termites and wood-decay fungi toward your home and fences.

Grinding solves both problems. A grinder uses a spinning steel wheel fitted with carbide teeth to chew the stump into chips, working side to side until the wood is below the soil line. Pulling a stump out whole tears up far more yard and leaves a crater. Grinding removes the part you see and trip over, plus the root flare, and leaves the deep roots to break down slowly underground.

The best time to plan for it is before the stump becomes a problem. If you are budgeting a new lawn, a paver walkway or a bed redesign, grinding first keeps the rest of the project on schedule.

What our stump grinding includes

Utility locate before we start

Florida law requires a call to Sunshine 811 before digging, and grinding counts. We place that request and wait for the lines to be marked so the grinder never meets a gas, water or cable line.

Grinding to the depth you need

For a lawn, we usually go 6 to 8 inches below grade so sod roots have real soil to grow into. Under a future paver base or planting bed, we can go deeper. We agree on the depth during the walkthrough, not on the day.

Surface roots and root flare

The wide flare at the base and the roots running just under the turf are what cause lumps and mower strikes. We follow them out and grind them down along with the stump.

Chips hauled or reused

Grinding leaves a mound of wood chips mixed with soil. We can haul it away, spread it as mulch in beds, or leave it for you. We explain the tradeoff, because fresh chips tie up nitrogen as they break down.

Backfill and leveling

Once the chips are cleared, we fill the hole with clean topsoil and tamp it. That way the spot settles less and is ready for seed, sod or plants.

Signs a stump should come out

Shoots coming back from the cut
Green sprouts around the stump mean the root system is still alive. Cutting them back only makes the roots push more. Grinding the crown stops the cycle.
Soft or crumbling wood
A stump that flakes apart or has mushrooms growing on it is rotting. That decaying wood draws termites, and a stump within a few feet of your home is worth taking seriously.
Mowing around it every week
If your mower scalps the turf around a stump or catches on roots, the stump is costing you time and blades. It also leaves a ring of thin grass that weeds move into.
A project planned for that spot
New sod, an irrigation line, a fence post or a patio all need clear ground. Grinding first means the installer is not working around buried wood.
Roots lifting a walkway or edging
When roots from an old stump heave pavers or concrete edging, grinding the flare and nearby surface roots takes away the pressure before the damage spreads.

How a grinding day runs

  1. 1

    Walkthrough and plan

We come out, measure each stump across the base, check gate widths and slopes, and ask what the spot will become. You get a free estimate that lists each stump and the cleanup option you choose.

  2. 2

    Locate and access

After the 811 marks are in, we bring a grinder sized for the job. A compact machine fits through most backyard gates. We lay plywood over soft turf or irrigation heads where the wheels have to cross.

  3. 3

    Grinding

We grind the stump down, then the flare and surface roots, checking depth as we go. Our crew stops and adjusts if the teeth hit rock, old concrete or a buried nail in the wood.

  4. 4

    Cleanup and backfill

Chips are raked out, hauled or spread as agreed, and the hole is filled and tamped. We blow off walks and driveways before we leave.

What moves the price of stump grinding

Every stump is quoted on its own after we see it, because two trees of the same height can leave very different stumps. The walkthrough is free, and the estimate shows each stump and each cleanup choice as a separate line. When grinding is one piece of a bigger yard plan, you can spread the cost with financing of up to $100,000, paid over anywhere from 2 to 12 years, and paying it off early carries no penalty.

Diameter at the base
Measured at ground level, not at the cut. The flare on an old oak can be far wider than the trunk above it, and that is the wood we grind.
Depth and roots
Grinding deeper for pavers or chasing long surface roots adds machine time. A stump ground just below grade for a bed costs less than one cleared out for sod.
Access and number of stumps
A stump behind a narrow gate or on a slope takes longer than one in an open front yard. Several stumps on one visit spread the setup time across all of them.
Cleanup choice
Leaving the chips is the lowest-cost option. Hauling them away and backfilling with topsoil adds material and labor, but leaves the ground ready to use.

Stump grinding questions

Will the stump grow back after grinding?
Grinding removes the crown, which is where most resprouting starts. Aggressive species can still send a few shoots from roots left in the ground. If that happens, the shoots are weak and usually stop after being cut back a few times. We tell you up front which of your trees are likely to do this.
Can you grind a palm stump?
Yes. Palm stumps are fibrous rather than woody, so they grind differently and leave a stringy material instead of chips. Palms do not resprout from the stump, but the old trunk base still rots and settles. Grinding it gives you a level spot. If the palm is still standing, our palm tree pruning and removal crew can handle that first.
How soon can I lay sod where the stump was?
Once the chips are removed and the hole is backfilled with topsoil, you can lay sod right away. Expect a little settling over the next few months as buried roots decay, and top-dress the spot if it dips. Our sod installation page explains how we prep the base.
Do you take down the tree too?
We do. Tree trimming and removal is a separate service, and planning both together means one walkthrough and one schedule. We are a family-owned, business-licensed company that has been working in Titusville since 2018.
Will the grinder damage my lawn or sprinklers?
The machine is heavy, so we pick the shortest route, lay boards over soft ground and flag sprinkler heads before we roll. If a line runs close to the stump, we mark it and grind carefully around it. If a head gets disturbed near the work area, we point it out so it can be fixed through our irrigation service.

Get the stump out before the next project starts

We will walk your yard, measure each stump and talk through what the ground will be used for next. You leave the visit with a written estimate and no obligation.
